Leo Fox Comic Book Printed by Ka-Blam - First Proof Arrives

The Proof of the Pudding...

Is in the eating. I staggered home from a friend's house somewhat drunk on London Pride last night to discover a comic book sized cardboard packet had arrived in the post.

After greedily ripping it open with childlike glee this is what I found:

It's an indescribable buzz to see the comic book you have been working on for two years appear in the physical realm as a real object, and a beautiful one at that. The guys at Ka-Blam have done a fantastic job. The colours pop and the atmosphere of the artwork is lifted immensely by getting the darkness into it that you miss on a backlit screen. It's much grittier and tougher than it looks on screen.

Take a look at these shots to see what I mean,

Take a look at some close ups too to get an idea of the detail and quality of the print,

OK I know these quick snaps don't really do it justice but trust me the printing is excellent.

Any problems? Not really, of course there are a few errors but sooner or later you have to just send the damn thing to print. I have been far too obsessed with fine details on this project and going forward I'll try to bear that in mind. It's been a huge learning curve but we cannot take 2 years to make one comic book again so we need to raise our game.

My conclusion at this stage is that print is always going to kick the arse off digital distribution systems. I will perhaps foolishly hang my hat on that right now. It is so much more impressive to hold a printed comic book than it is to read the thing on a computer it's hardly even the same experience at all.

Thanks for reading, and thanks to everyone who voted for us in the competition at Talenthouse.

Leo Fox Comic Book Issue 1 Now Available to buy in Print

I received this in my email inbox this morning...

unfitcomix,

Your comic "The Mysterious Leo Fox - Issue 1" has been added to Ka-Blam's Digital Comics Shops!
Here is the web address to the IndyPlanet listing for your comic- http://www.indyplanet.com/index.php?id=.
Yes, that's correct. We are in print! After two years of production you can finally buy and read the printed version of issue one. The cover price is $3.95 but you'll end up paying around $10.00 to ship it to the UK. That works out to about 7.00 GBP. Here it is IN THE SHOP!

The next step for us is to get hold of a copy and assess the quality. If it checks out OK we'll probably order a box full and start targeting blogs and magazines with copies for review.

More on that later.

Leo Fox Issue 1 sent to Ka-Blam for Print

With great trepidation and excitement I can finally announce that Leo Fox Issue 1 has been sent to the printer. We've chosen Ka-Blam Digital Printing to do the job for a few reasons. Ka-Blam specialise in printing comic books (unlike similar services based here in the UK) and they have a reputation for turning out brilliant colours.

They'll also take care of a lot of the business stuff - they'll allocate us an ISBN number and bar code and we'll be able to sell the comic via their sister site Indy Planet. We can even distribute through their distro outfit Comics Monkey.

We're really, really, really excited about seeing the final version in print.

It's really happening! Take a look at this. Proof that order 22158 is in the system.

What happens next?

The guys at Ka-Blam have to get around to servicing our order, downloading our files and prepping them on their system.

Then we will order a proof copy, which will probably take weeks to cross the atlantic.

I'm hoping we'll see Leo Fox in print before the end of 2011.

Fingers crossed!

If you're thinking of using Ka-Blam - Stay Tuned for a technical post on how we prepped Leo Fox for digital printing - coming soon 'the science bit'

Unfit Comix throw Leo Fox into the Ring at Talenthouse

Things got pretty exciting today when my illustrator friend Jenny Ball threw me a link to a SWEET competition at the Talenthouse Web site. Apparently they are offering a publishing deal on the new digital comics platform Graphic.ly and a mentoring session from a comics pro - Jim Mahfood for the best project to enter.

Well now, I did enter that competition faster than you can say - how does one enter? It's done. We are in the ring and ready to do battle with three of our best pages uploaded for voting. Choosing the pages was pretty tough but I think the pages I put up best reflect the narrative, the drama and the art. I'm hopeful that Mahfood will get the project because he's all into street art and such and we have that vibe going on.

Anyway, go and see for yourself! If you like the project then vote for it. You will have to sign up to the site to do so but hey, it's a pretty cool site.

New Features for Leo Fox Comic Blog

You know when you wipe up some gunk in the kitchen and you realise you've made a clean spot? And then you have to do the whole kitchen? That's pretty much what happened here at the Mysterious Leo Fox Comic blog. I lost the html for the old layout so I had to bend my head round the hideous new blogger layout designer.

How do you win? Nice wide, white space to make it nicer to read! More ways to interact and comment and contribute and download free stuff!

You can now join the site using Google Friend Connect, 'Like' (Me Gusta - It's in Spanish, don't ask me why.) posts on Facebook or 'Tweet' anything that catches your interest. The posts are now getting properly tagged so you can read what interests you more easily without wading through the archive.

That's all! Now back to work. I have sworn before all the gods that Issue 1 will be printed and available to buy from Indy Planet before Christmas. There is much to be done.

Strange Things Spotted in Light Junkies on Flikr

It seems that our worst fears have been realised. The Strange Things are real and now there is photographic evidence. We thought Leo Fox was just a comic book! We were wrong.

Props to http://www.flickr.com/photos/twincitiesbrightest/ for papping the strange things. Check out the http://www.flickr.com/groups/lightjunkies/ group if you like this sort of business.
